PAYM Policy Forum @ Jalan Besar GRC: 'Singaporeans vs. PRs: Minding the Gap'

Eating durians, attending community events and becoming a citizen - do these actions necessarily constitute integration?

This question posed by Dr Leong Chan Hoong generated a stir among the audience present at the PAYM Policy Forum @ Jalan Besar GRC, held in Suntec City Convention Centre on the 27th of March 2010. The topic of the policy forum was 'Singaporeans vs. PRs (Permanent Residents): Minding the Gap' and attracted about 100 youths, from students to working adults.

A panel of speakers was invited to speak on the topic, including Mr Heng Chee How, Minister of State for Prime Minister's Office, Dr Umayal Lakshmanan, a PR-turned-Singaporean, and Dr Leong, a research fellow at the Institute of Policy Studies. Drawing examples from their everyday lives, the panellists provided the participants with their views on the issue, and commented on recent government policies that sought to widen the Singaporean and PR gap in terms of healthcare, housing and education.

Participants first broke up into 6 small teams to discuss the topic in 3 areas, namely the distinctions that are present in Singapore between citizens and PRs, the role of the PRs and integration of both parties. Youths contributed their opinions and a summary of points was presented during the forum to give the discussion a multi-faceted dimension. Most of them were enthusiastic in their responses, often citing real-life examples to substantiate their points.

The Question-and-Answer session saw participants posing astute questions and examining the topic in depth. Is Singapore doing enough to encourage integration, not just assimilation? Are the distinctions between citizens and PRs too wide? Where is Singapore heading towards on this issue? The forum ended with a consensus that the distinctions are indeed justified and that there is a need for integration between Singaporeans and PRs.

On the whole, the policy forum was a success. The organising team would like to use this opportunity to thank our panellists, Mr Heng, Dr Leong and Ms Lakshmanan and the youths for their active participation and support. We look forward to seeing you at our next policy forum!

Kampong Glam Re-appointment and CNY Celebration on 21 Feb

Hundreds of grassroots leaders turned up on 21 Feb at Kampong Glam CC for the re-appointment and Chinese New Year Celebration. There were plenty of exciting performances and games. This year's event was organised by Kampong Glam Women Executive Committee.
Around 17 Kampong Glam YEC members turned up for the re-appointment and Yusheng session. Everyone had fun and looking forward to a great year ahead!

Spring Cleaning of one room flats and teambuilding on 23 Jan 10

On 22 Jan, 22 young volunteers from Kampong Glam and Telok Ayer Hong Lim Green YECs, in partnership with PeaceConnect came together for a big clean-up of the homes belonging to 11 under privileged households located in Beach Road.

Armed with all manner of cleaning equipment, including mops, brooms, pails and stain-removers, the volunteers waged a 'war' against dust and grime, some of which have been collecting for many years as their aged or less able owners were unable o upkeep their homes. After three hours of thorough dustings, sweeping, mopping, wiping and scrubbing that took place from 9am to 12pm, the volunteers managed to clean-out the dirt and make the homes spick and span.
The YEC members then proceed to Professor Brawn Cafe in Novena for a teambuilding session for the 2 YECs to get to know each other better and to lookout for opportunity to work together in future events. A toal of 24 members turned up and it was indeed a very fruitful and wonderful teambuilding session and we were defintely looking forward to the next joint teambuilding session again.

Kampong Glam Scholarship and Bursary Presentation on 10 Jan 2010

About 800 residents, students and grassroots leaders gathered at the Kampong Glam Community Club to celebrate the outstanding achievements of the many deserving students. At the annual 2010 Kampong Glam Scholarship and Bursary Awards Presentation Ceremony, a total of 346 awards were given out. They were:

1) 99 students received the EDUSAVE Scholarship Award;
2) 146 received the EDUSAVE Merit Bursary Awards;
3) 29 were awarded the Ted De Ponti Primary and Secondary Bursary Award and
4) 72 were Kampong Glam CCC's Book Prize recipients.

Members from Kampong Glam Youth Executive Committee came down to help in manning the registration counters and some of the members were actually the emcee for the ceremony.

Distribution of medical welfare assistance to needy residents in Nov 09

Kampong Glam Youth Club members together with Kampong Glam Grassroots Leaders helped to distribute medical welfare fund to needy residents who need the financial assistance for their medical bills. Goodies bags consisted of essential food items were also distributed to them.

Youth Club members helping to prepack more than 130 goodies bags a few days in advance before the actual distribution.

Kampong Glam Youth Executive Committee (YEC) had its 18th term Biennial General Meeting (BGM) on 10 Oct (Sat) at Screme Cafe @ SMU, School of Information Systems. The theme was Kampong days in the 70s to 80s. More than 100 people attended the BGM and the Guest of Honour was Ms Denise Phua, MP for Jalan Besar GRC and Adviser to Kampong Glam GROs. There were a total of 29 new members for the new term, however only 20 members managed to turn up due to important work and personal committment. Nevertheless, the new Committee members still managed to put up wonderful performances after the BGM proper by singing the songs " Top of the World" and "Y.E.C Yeah". In addition, 'Elvis Pressly' and 'Michael Jackson' made special guest appearances too and sang " Can't helping Falling in Love" and 'Heal the World" respectively with all the 18th term YEC members!

The audiences cheered and sang the songs togther with the YEC members and it was indeed one of the best BGMs ever seen in Singapore! I believed the 18th term YEC will be able to go on to scale greater heights and achieve greater success than the previous term. Three cheers to Kampong Glam YEC..Hip hip hooray...hip hip hooray...hip hip hooray!

Congratulation to Dex Yuen for winning the Area Z3 Evaluation Contest on 1 Oct 2009

Dex Yuen and Primus Yuen, from Kampong Glam Toastmasters Club, took part in the Area Z3 Evaluation and Humourous Contest respectively on 1 Oct 2009 at Katong CC.

Dex was in his usual best self and became the Champion in the Evaluation Contest and will represent Area Z in the Division Z Evaluation Contest at Fengshan CC from 2pm to 5pm.

Distribution of mooncakes to more than 300 needy people at Peace Connect on 19 Sept 2009

Kampong Glam and Kim Seng YECs collaborated with Raffles Hotel to distribute mooncakes to the needy families in Kim Seng and Kampong Glam Constituencies respectively on 19 Sept 2009 from 1pm to 3pm. The Guest Of Honour was Ms Denise Phua, MP for Jalan Besar GRC and Adviser to Kampong Glam GROs. Raffles Hotel had sponsored 800 mooncakes for this meaningful community event and you could see the happy faces of the residents when they collected the mooncakes. More than 40 volunteers from Raffles hotel and the 2 YECs had turned up to help in the distribution. The residents were all very happy and appreciated by the nice gesture and let's look forward to more of such meaningful community service projects.

Kampong Glam National Day Dinner Celebration on 15 Aug

Kampong Glam celebrated its 44th National Day Dinner on 15 Aug from 7pm to 10pm. More than 1200 guests and residents turned up to celebration this occasion. The Guest Of Honour was Ms Denise Phua, MP for Jalan Besar GRC and Adviser to Kampong Glam GROs and Dr Lee Boon Yang was one of the invited guests as well. This year's Organising Chairman was Melvin Pang from the YEC and it was indeed a very good experience and learning journey for him. The Emcee was good and managed to engage the audience. Many of them enjoyed the performances and games lined up by the event company.

The atmosphere was electrifying when everyone who were present sang the national day songs with pride! Happy Birthday Singapore!

Kampong Glam Racial Harmony Day on 12 July

Kampong Glam Constituency celebrated the Racial Harmony Day at Kelantan Court on 12 July from 9am to 1pm and there were many activities lined up for the residents. Kampong Glam YEC members also got involved by selling baby clothings to the residents for a charitable cause.
YEC members such as Cynthia, Adrian, Dela, Evelyn and Yong Kee came down to help out and more than $80 was raised and it was indeed worth the effort. Hip hip hooray !

Wilfred was invited to represent PAYM in a Youth Connect! Marketing Conference on 18 May 2009 at Grand Copthorne Waterfront. He was part of a panellist of 5 for the conference section on “What Makes Youth Tick”. This session is a platform for youth panellists to voice their opinions on the psyche, lifestyle and trends that influence youth.

Organisations attending came from the public, private and non-profit sectors, with a majority from the public sector. They were:
Health Promotion Board, Center for American Education, STB, Intellectual Property Office of Singapore, Singapore Table Tennis Association, New Creation Church, Kimberly Clark, Central Narcotics Bureau, National Youth Council, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Nanyang Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic, NTUC Club, National Parks Board, NTU, NUS, S'pore Discovery Centre, SIM, Celcom Mobile, UOL Group Ltd, Amway (China) and more.

It was truly an enjoyable experience for Wilfred as it was his first opportunity to speak to a large audience in an unfamiliar environment. It gave him conference exposure as he presented his ideas across a daunting audience.

Kampong Glam YEC Teambuilding Retreat At Batam on 16 to 17 May

Around 25 YEC members from Kampong Glam and their loved ones went to Batam KTM resort from 16 to 17 May. It was a time where our members could spend quality time with their loved ones and to relax themselves. It was also a time where the YEC members could get to know each other better and discuss about our future plans and the activities we will be organising for the next term. It was free and easy on the first day where most of us went to the Spa for a relaxing massage while some of them booked a cab and went out shopping. On the second day, there was a tour arranged for us and we went brought to look at iconic buildings, temples and also to buy local products. It was indeed a fun and relaxing trip and I am defintely looking forward to more of such teambuilding trips.

All 11 youth who had turned up for the recruitment and sharing session at Kampong Glam CC have signed up as Committee members for the coming 18th term. They were a bunch of youth who were committed, honest, dynamic, energetic and with a passion for community service. The Chairman gave a short presentation on what PAYM and YEC were about and also the sharing session by the existing YEC members gave the potential members a detailed explanation and overview of what Kampong Glam Youth Group is about. With the joining of the 11 new members, we will now have 28 energetic and committed youth ready to do good to the community! I can't wait for the new term to start and achieve greater things with the new committee.

Around 40 people from all over Singapore came together to celebrate ''World Laughter Day'' with the rest of the world on 3rd May from 3.30pm to 4.30pm at Kampong Glam CC and enjoyed a really good laugh from the experienced and popular Ms Zaibun. The participants were really sporting, spontaneous and learnt different types of laughters from the trainer.

“World Laughter Day” was created in 1998 by Dr. Madan Kataria, founder of the worldwide Laughter Yoga and the celebration of World Laughter Day is a positive manifestation for world peace and is intended to build up a global consciousness of brotherhood and friendship through laughter. 40 participants attended the 'Boasting Your Self Esteem and Personal Grooming Tips' on 2 May (Sat) at Kampong Glam CC Mini Theatre from 3pm to 4.30pm. Participants were taught by the trainer, Mr Danny, on the techniques to be self confidence and boast your self esteem to achieve success in your life.

The participants were also taught personal grooming tips by a former stewardness in the later part of the workshop and many found the grooming tips very useful and practical. This Workshop was organised by Kampong Glam Youth Executive Committee and supported by Health Promotion Board (HPB).

90 Youth Attended The PAYM Policy Forum On New Media On 18 April @ National Museum

90 youth spent their afternoon at the National Museum, The Salon, on 18 April (Sat) from 1.30pm to 5.30pm and attended the PAYM Policy Forum on New Media: Can the internet be self -regulated? This event was brought to you by 9 YECs, including Kampong Glam YEC, in the Jalan Besar GRC and the Guest Of Honour was Dr Lee Boon Yang while the panelist was Associate Professor Alfred Choi from NTU. It was indeed a very engaging forum and very candid sharing by Dr Lee and AP Alfred.

The participants were spread out into 5 groups to share their views on the possibilities of the regulation of internet from various perspectives such as individual, companies and government organisation. Many questions were asked by the participants and were also answered truthfully by Dr Lee Boon Yang. I believed it was an afternoon well spent by the youth and let's look forward to the next Policy Forum by Jalan Besar GRC!

More than 25 people turned up on April's fool day at Kampong Glam CC to attend the Laughter Yoga Workshop conducted by renowned trainer Ms Zaibun Sira. All the participants learnt many different kinds of laughters and all of them enjoyed themselves very much. Laughter put people in a positive frame of mind and gradually makes them positive thinkers. It provides a sense of well-being and can be compared to any aerobic exercises. In addition, laughter is one of the best anti-stress exercises and can help to tone up the muscles of the face and improves facial expressions. More than 80 people from all over Singapore turned up at Kampong Glam CC on 7 March from 3pm to 5pm to learn how to build positive relationship and understanding body language. The participants went through the presentation and practical exercises by the trainer, Ms Diana Chandra Oh who has more than 20 over years of experience in training and education.

This event was organised By Kampong Glam Youth Group and supported by Health Promotion Board. 5000 party revellers partying at City Hall front on 31 Jan !

5000 party revellers turned up at City Hall front for City Alive, the biggest street party in Singapore! The people enjoyed the Funkamania dance competition which started at 10.30pm and there were renowned DJs such as DJ Sassy, DJ Sarasa and DJ Koflow that kept spinning wonderful music. The GOH was Minister Lim Boon Heng and VIPS from SMRT and APB also turned up to support this party. The turnout was overwhelming and unexpected! I am indeed honoured to be the Co-organsing chairman for this year's City Alive 2009 and defintely looking forward to City Alive 2010! Hundreds of people turned up on 1st Jan 09 at Telok Ayer Hong Lim Green CC at 8.30 am to take part in Kampong Glam Community Day. There were detox exercises, birds and dogs exhibitions, dance and Wushu displays, Walkathon and Tug-Of -War Competition ! Primus, Wilfred and Melvin took part in the Tug-Of-War Competiton and only Primus's team managed to win a prize (third placing). The three of us also tried our luck in trying to lift a gigantic tyre ! We managed to lift it but only with the help of the big size guy from behemoth Club.

More than 100 grassroots leaders from Kampong Glam Constituency turned up on 21 Dec (Sun) at 9 am at the Civil Service Club to play bowling and to have fun! Ms Denise Phua was the GOH for this event. Dex, Primus, Irene and Melvin represented Kampong Glam YEC and though we did not win any prizes but we did enjoyed ourselves and it was indeed worth getting up early on a Sun morning!

More than 43 people turned up at Kampong Glam CC on 22 Nov from 3pm to 5pm to nurture their minds by experienced speaker Ms Zaibun Siraj despite of the heavy rain. The participants were taught important and practical skills on how to have positive relationships, improve their self-esteem and how to cope with stress. There was laughters everywhere thanks to the innovative teaching methods and funny jokes shared by Ms Zaibun. The event was extremely successful and the participants were looking forward to more mental wellness programmes to be organised by Kampong Glam YEC and HPB.

Kampong Glam YEC held a fun Bowling Tournament at Planet Bowl@ Civil Service Club on 18 Oct (Sat) from 9.30am to 12.30pm. This event was organised by the Sports and Recreation Secretary, Nick Liw. The atmosphere was relaxed initially but became more intense as the tournament progressed. "Strikes" were followed by cheers and High-fives as team members bowled 3 games each. After battling amongst the teams for the right to be crowned Kampong Glam 2008 Bowling Champion, light refreshments were served as their total scores were been tabulated. Many thanks to the 7 YEC members who came down
and helped out at this event. Hip hip Hooray!

Wilfred returned from enriching PAYM - Shanghai Enterprise Attachment Programme from 16 to 28 Sept

Shanghai Enterprise Attachment Programme has always been a fruitful exchange event every year between People’s Association Youth Movement (PAYM) and Shanghai Youth Federation. This year, 5 delegates were sent over to Shanghai for this year’s exchange.

The group of 5 met with the volunteers at Shanghai Youth Federation (SYF) Headquarters. There was a short briefing of the development of Shanghai over the years, and what is SYF’s mission and vision were being shared in an hour’s briefing.

Wilfred were both posted to the Shanghai Youth Newspapers Company (上海青年报社) and shown the office. The HR personnel, Dai Rong, briefed the 2 delegates on what was the work process of day to day publication and showed them the finished newspapers on that same day. She also shared with them the organizational structure and culture within the company which includes its subsidiaries. The delegates were asked to share with her what were their expectations in this attachment and what was the area of news publication that they were comfortable in. There was a freedom of choice and gladly, the delegates were then posted internally to the various departments that they find comfort in.

Being in the finance news department which suited him perfectly as he is currently an undergraduate in NTU pursuing a degree in Business, specializing in Banking & Finance. The 1st article he published was a translation from Bloomberg which is the article on the purchasing of HBOS by Lloyds Bank onto the newspaper the very next day.

After the success of his 1st article, he went on to publish his 2nd article which revolves around the AIG Bailout incident in US. The demand from him is slightly different this time round. He was required to do online interviews with Singaporeans who are holding AIA insurance policies. This was to give China an overview of the global situation of AIG.

To further make this trip an enriching one, Wilfred took part in the section “Happy Singles” of the magazine subsidiary, Life Weekly (生活周刊). Every week, a male and a female will be chosen from a pool of applicants to be featured for this particular section. In this section, the participants will have a date with one another on that day and be asked questions that are associated with their love experiences and what do they look for in a soul mate. The only condition is that the participants have to be singles. As Wilfred is the SDS Secretary in his YEC, he took the opportunity to learn from this event and how it will be applicable in the context of Singapore. The photo shoot was successful and it is expected to be published during mid October.

Sitting in the office writing articles can be boring after a while if one is not used to it.
Therefore, the finance news department head, Jin Yu, arranged for Wilfred to be attached to their top finance reporter for a day, Mr. Pu. During this day, he visited the finance district which seemingly resembles Singapore’s CBD area. Not only did he visit the finance district, together with Mr.Pu, he interviewed one of the vice president of the investment division of Bank of China. The topic revolves around the financial outlook for the next few periods.

Overall, it was a great experience for Wilfred to be close to what he does best and learn the Chinese perspective of dealing with things.

Closely fought Toastmasters Humorous and Evaluation Speech Contests on 23 Sept

Melvin Pang, Arun Kumar and Henrietta How had represented Kampong Glam Toastmasters Club in the Area Z3 Humorous and Evaluation Speech Contests on 23 Sept (Thurs) at NOL building at 7.30pm . Participants from the 4 Toastmasters Clubs took part in this contest. It was a closely fought contest in both the Homorous and Evaluation Contests. It was a very good experience for the contestants from Kampong Glam Toastmasters Club and Melvin Pang emerged as the 2nd runner up in the Humorous Speech Contest with his speech title " Oops".

On 21 Sept 2008 (Sun), 4 members from Kampong Glam YEC and teachers from KampongGlam PCF had brought 23 children from the KidsRead programme to watch The Rainbow Fish show at the Alliance Francaise Theatre. This activity was organised by Vice Chairman of Kampong Glam YEC, Ms Cynthia Shaw. The children were divided into morning and afternoon session. Through this interesting show, the children had learnt the importance of helping, sharing and getting along with one another.The children were also given goodie bags at the end of the show and all of them, including the volunteers, had enjoyed themselves very much. Hip hip hooray !

Scholarship and Bursary awards on 20 Sept 08 at Kampong Glam CC

Kampong Glam YEC and Telok Ayer Hong Lim Green YEC with the support from the CCMC, organised the Scholarship and Bursary awards for Tertiary students on 20 Sept (Sat) at Kampong Glam CC. The Guest of Honour was Ms Denise Phua, MP for Jalan Besar GRC and Adviser to Kampong Glam GROs. Prior to the awards presentation, Melvin Pang from Kampong Glam YEC gave a 45 min talks on " The art of giving a superb presentation" to the audience, comprises of tertiary students and grassroots leaders. Pa Star grading awards was also given out that day to the various grassroots committees.

Thousands of people flocked to Stamp Exhibition and Prize Presentation at National Library

On 5 Sept to 7 Sept 2008, Kampong Glam YEC Stamp Club had collaborated with the Singapore Philatelic Museum (SPM) and Kreta Ayer Stamp Society to organise the annual Stamp Exhibition and National Stamp collecting Prize presentation at the National Library at Bras Basah Complex. The launch of the event was held on 6 Sept and the Guest of Honour was Mr Wilson Tan, Group CEO for Singapore Post Limited. 11 YEC members had came down to support and help in this event. About 500 people had attended the launch and through out the 3 days event, thousands of people were attracted by the many different types of stamps on displays and also visited the display booths manned by the stamp dealers.

This event was a resounding success and members of the Kampong Glam Stamp Club are looking forward to next year's event.

International Youth Camp in Korea from 7 July to 12 July 08

From 7 July to 12 July 2008, the Chairman from Kampong Glam YEC, Melvin Pang, was nominated by PAYM to attend the International Youth Camp in South Korea, Incheon. The Youth camp was very fun and they had youths coming from many countries such as Korea, Japan, China, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Brunei and Hong Kong. A total of about 60 Youths attended this camp and 3 were from Singapore! The participants learnt from each other the differences in cultures and traditions. The participants even had a one day sight seeing tour in Seoul and also performed volunteering work at Kkottongnae, a charitable Welfare Complex where I had helped to wash toilets and scrub the walls. The whole camp was defintely an eye opener and an unforgetable experience.

More than 100 Youths turned up at PAYM Policy Forum on 13 July 08

On 13 July 2008, all the 9 YECs in Jalan Besar GRC were involved in organsing our first Policy Forum for the year. The topic was " Singapore..transit stopover or final destination". Kampong Glam YEC was involved in ushering and registration. More than 100 people attended this Policy Forum which was held at the Asian Civilisation Museum and it was reported in the newspaper as well. The Guest-Of-Honour was Ms Denise Phua, MP for Jalan Besar GRC andAdviser to Kampong Glam GROs and we had two panelists to join her as well in this Policy Forum. The participants were involved in a lively discussions with the GOH and the panelists. We are certainly looking forward to the next JalanBesar GRC Policy Forum !

YEC Teambuilding retreat at Genting from 9 May to 11 May 08

Between 9 May to 11 May 2008, around 11 committee members from Kampong Glam Youth Executive Committee (YEC) and the staff in-charge went to Genting Highland in Malaysia for our yearly teambuilding retreat. Some of our loved ones tagged along for this trip as well. We had our monthly YEC meeting at Genting too. This was indeed a very relaxing trip and it also served as a reward for the Committee as all of us had worked very hard to contribute back to the community for the past year. All of us are certainly looking forward to the next overseas retreat! Hip hip hooray!

5 enthusiastic participants attended the PC Video Making Workshop on 12 Aug 07 (sat) afternoon.

Our experienced instructor, Mr Robin, shared with the participants many useful tips on video production. They learnt practical skills on transferring video from DVR, Video Camera etc to the PC digital format. Computer Club Is Alive !

It’s was a sunny Sunday afternoon on 1 Jul 2007.

Cavan, Melvin and myself gathered at Kampong Glam CC computer room to do housekeeping.

After 3 hours of hard work and “sweat” work, we transformed the dirty and dusty computer room into a refreshing and clean computer room.

We also removed 10 old PCs to make way for 10 new Acer PCs !

With the new PCs and the upcoming calendar of computer courses, Kampong Glam CC Computer Club will definitely be alive again with lots of activities. Keep a look out for the list of “Upcoming Events” on the right hand side of this blog.

Lastly, we must not forget Mdm Yeo, Jane and the cleaner for helping out too. It's about teamwork !

Who says Team Building got to be in Singapore?

On 4 May 2007, 9 YEC members together with David, the Assistant Constituency Manager went for a 3 days 2 nights trip onboard Omar III Cruise.

It was the first teambuilding trip for YEC outside of Singapore! Not only that, we did it on the sea in International waters!

It was a wonderful experience. We had lots of food and drinks. We were mesmerised by the beautiful sun rises and sun sets. Most importantly, we indulged in great discussion on board the ship.

Effective Emceeing Skills

You can see why I like going to NACLI's course as I'm back to the Learning Institute today.

Today is another sunny Sunday morning, many of us should be sleeping at home. But about 25 grassroots leaders from all over Singapore turned for the "Effective Emceeing Skills" course conducted by Kim Suah.

What I learnt at the course:

1) EmCee is derived from "Master of Ceremony".

2) Importance of protocol. How to address VIPs and visitors. You can check with your Senior Constituency Manager or the Group Constituency Manager for guidance on the protocol. Most people are not aware who is Group Constituency Manager (GCM). GCM manages a group of constituencies.

3) The 5 key roles of an EmCee are:
a) Composer
b) Coordinator
c) Controller
d) Communicator
e) Controller

What's the most beneficial is the role play. We were video recorded and we reviewed our "performance" together. It was fun to see ourselves "fumble" and we learnt many things along the way.

Most importantly, we met many new friends. I have the opportunity to exchange contacts with some of them. If you are my course mates, do remember to drop a message here.

On a sunny sunday morning (10 Mar 2007), I'm back to NACLI (National Community Leadership Institute.

This is the first time I'm attending a course conducted in mandarin at NACLI. Strangely, I was a bit excited and lokking forward to it. Primarily, I'm eager to learnt more about Sun Tzu. Visit Wikipedia for more information about Sun Tzu.

My teacher (王志光)is an experienced veteran who has worked in the Civil Service for many many years. He is around 60 years old. Definitely a wise old man to learn from.

During the 1 day course, I learnt many useful tips on interpersonal relationships. It's importance on the success of our lives in career, family, friendships etc can be summarised as follow:

87.5% - Interpersonal relationships
12.5% - Knowledge

According to research, your success in life is 87.5% dependant on Interpersonal relationships. Start focusing on improving your Interpersonal relationships if you want greater Success in life.

There are many other tips I learnt which you ought to find out yourself by attending the course at NACLI. I highly recommend anyone to attend this course.

It was a night of excitement and colours at Orchard Road on 24 Feb 07 (sat).

Orchard Road was closed to traffic to facilitate Chingay 2007. At 6.30pm, Orchard was already packed with people on both sides of the road. People are seated on the road. Some brought their own mats, others like myself brought along food and drinks.

The first episode of Chingay was an argument between a Chingay Staff and an audience. Apparently, the audience paid for a Chingay ticket that was meant to be a complimentary ticket. Luckily, the heated argument was “extinguished” shortly after the audience cool down.

It was a long wait before the actual parade starts at 8.00pm. It was fun to see the different nationalities and culture performing down the lane. The performers put up a great show and many of us were certainly entertained. Though we were tired from sitting on the road for a few hours …

Toastmaster is a non-profit organization that promotes public speaking globally. It is effective and affordable. Millions of people have benefited from Toastmaster since it was founded. Today, there are more than 140 Toastmaster Clubs in Singapore. Many of them held their Toastmaster Meetings at Community Clubs.

As a Toastmaster member for more than 3 years, I’ve learnt and grown through the years. My public speaking skills and confidence have improved with practices and guidances by the experienced Toastmasters.

I’m happy to join Kampong Glam Toastmaster Club and I’ve volunteer to be the Vice President (Public Relations) for the club. It is now my duty to share with you the benefits of Toastmaster and to encourage you to join us.

We are meeting every last Thursday of the Month. The next chapter meeting will be held on 29 Mar 2007 (Thur).

Life Long Learning at NACLI

Hi friends,

I just attended a course on "DISCovering Yourself and Others - Behavourial Analysis Using DISC Profile" at National Community Leadership Institute (NACLI) on 7 Jan 07 (sun).

This is a fully subsidised training programme for community leaders.

Community leaders, if you have not sign up for any programme yet, please do not wait any more. These programmes are well planned and professionally delivered by the trainers at NACLI. Its Party Time !

At 7pm, most of the YEC members had gathered at Mana - an authentic korean restaurant located along 101-109 Telok Ayer Street.

We ordered lots of good food and gave our stomach a warm treat. The ambience was good, so was the service. Though I had a little cramp on my knee by sitting on the floor for about 1 1/2 hour. The price (est $300) was definitely reasonable for 10 of us.

Think we are done after the dinner ? No way. We head to a nearby pub (can't remember the name of the pub ..hehehe ... maybe someone else can remind me leh) for Karaoke and X'mas Present exchange. We practically book half of the pub ! We had pool games, karaoke session, gossiping ... Oops did I say gossip ? Yeap YEC do gossip lah ... hahaha ...
